Finally got a pic of my baby juruense. He's about 3" long. For the time being he's in a 20L until he gets a little bigger, then he goes in to a 75, then a 300. I have read that they like a strong current so I have a powerhead in there. He seems to enjoy swimming in it and likes to sit on a large rock below some driftwood and let it blow over him.

He doesn't seem very active in finding food though. He eats well, and when the current blows bloodworms past him he just devours them, but I find myself having to feed much more than he actually eats for him to get his fill since he won't go searching for them. I then have to fish all the uneaten pieces out from the bottom of the tank. Any suggestions? Also, I have tried some sinking shrimp/crill pellets and he doesn't seem to like them. He will eat them and then just spit them out. I would like to vary his diet so are there any suggestions on what he might like?

Try feeding him with the lights off and then he may feel more comfortable and move around and clean of the food for you. Or just add something else to clean up after him. As far as the pellets go just keep trying. As he gets bigger you could try starveing him and only offering the pellets to eat. But I would only do that when he gets a lot bigger. For now just vary his diet with other frozen food like shrimp or krill or something like that. Hope this helps.

those cats are awesome, congrats! definitely on my must have list when I get a much bigger tank or build an indoor pond. :woot:

I had mine on blood worms when he was small and he would do the exact same thing eating them as they drifted by. Mine was in a bare bottom tank so clean up was easy. Hes now 6" and eats live rosys. I was trying to get him onto prawn and small silversides, but he wont eat them. Unfortunately I have to feed live rosys in the tank because I have 5 small peacock bass that are not big enough to ween off of live food. I guess I'm going to have to wait until they get a bit bigger before I can get him to eat prepared and frozen foods.

That seems to be how it is going for me too. Other than the worms that float through the current, the only thing he will eat is baby danios (live). I have tried frozen brine shrimp, krill, etc., but the only thing he will take is worms. Right now I will just feed him anything that he will take. Once he gets bigger I will try to wean him off of live feeders and on to prepaired food. Any other suggestions?

You might throw in a small single Corydora or a tiny loach to clean up the Bloodworms after him!

Miles - Good idea. I am not really a fan of keeping single cory's as they are happier in schools, but I did end up getting 3 small Geophagus surinamensis to clean up after them. Everything I have heard about them says that they like to sift through the substrate for food, so hopefully they work.

MlL - Hand feeding is another good idea. I hadn't considered that yet. I will give that a try and see how it works out.
