Question - One of my guppies (i think its a snakeskin?) has this small red tube coming out of the bottom of his body, near the gonopodium (spelling?). It resembles sort of what an intestine would look like if it came out. Im not sure if this is a good explination, but its red, small tube looking, and comes out right by the sex organs.

He was not swimming like he is dying, but he is just kind of moving around in the same area mabye like he is sort of weighted down. I have noticed a few of the danios being interested in this red thing. Then he started getting jittery, turned sideways, and you know the rest.

Also, he has a real nice tail that fans out but the very very tips of it appear to be getting brown. He is normally a yellowish/goldish color.

Any help here??? Please?

It sounds like a prolapsed intestine, this can cause intestinal blockage, which can cause death. How old was he, they don't usually live more than 2-3 years.

If it makes you feel any better, it sounds like it was an unavoidable death.
I thought guppies only lived on year, that's what a fish mag said.

He was probably only 6 mo. old. He came from my very first round of babies when i got into keeping guppies.

Another thread in the general forum suggested that i had Callanus nematodes. Any thoughts?

If it is camallanus worms they look like these pics ( from Kevin Piper and www.pleco.de)
Treat your tank with a med containing Praziquantel, Anti parasite foods containing it are available, Jungle makes one.

ya its not like that at all, it was one large tube coming out of the same place....

Sounds like rectal prolapse, guppies are sometimes prone to it if they are greedy feeders and eat dry flake food to fast. It causes a blockage and constipation followed by the prolapse. Here i s a link that is for cats but also applies to fish. Note the description of "doughnut or reddened sausage protruding from anus."

Hey guppy, thanks for the link. That sounds quite like what i saw....

You mentioned flake food, I stopped feeding them flakes and now only feed them a mixture of tubifex, bloodworms, and brine shrimp, all freeze dried. Is this appropriate?:naughty:
