Noticed that my HRP male was in his breeding dress today, It's hard to get pics that accurately show his looks, so I got one camera mode that shows the red more in his fins and top of his body.

here he is normally, very blue

Here are a few with another setting that shows his red (but washes out the blue)

in reality the fish shows both the red and blue but I can't seem to capture it just right, I don't confess to being a camera expert. Here is a picture of his mate

Thanks for looking!

Nice shots - do you notice that when he goes into breeding dress the red in his tail disappears? When mine was breeding his red tail went blue and his black bars were very obvious

Yeah youre right the red in his tail does fade when he is in breeding mode. They are a very interesting fish thats for sure!
mine also has a small part of his tail, in the middle that is a 1cm long extension. anyone else have tail extensions on their HRPS?

They look great!

Do you know the length of that guy? Still trying to decide which small CA cichlid to go with....

very nice HRP reminds me of my big male

Thanks everyone, the total length on that guy seems to be around 5" The fish came to my LFS at this size so I don't know if its wild, f1 or whatever but its always looked in great condition

My HRP Rio Danli normally has the red tail and fins. And when guarding eggs or tending fry turns all blue. He is adult and a little over 4".
