my birthday present, first lungfish, which species?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sure is a nice gift.

It's a WAL....a protopterus annectens...(West African Lungfish)...wich means that your birthday gift will probably...kill all it's room mates.
It's best to keep it in his own tank...I t can go good for a while but sooner or later it will turn on his tankmates.

Goodluck it is quite a looker

thanks for the info! placed him in his own 75 till he outgrows that. would a 180 work for life?

I still find this a tough question..I would go a little deeper than a standard 180.
Mine are both in 5 x 2,5 and are doing fine they are healthy and I don't have the feeling they are cramped....but somehow this size tank does not feel right for me.And I don't know how this will take out in the longrun...And I would like to give them some more space...I'm planing on buying some new and bigger tanks for them this year..prob. 7x3 ft.
I still haven't quite figured it out yet.

with just the WAL on its own, a 180g should be fine for life...they don't need a ton of turning room, and can easily stretch out with their 6' of space. if you really want to go wider, you could go with a 3' wide tank, but i wouldn't bother with much wider than that. again, the fish should be fine in a 180g--
