Looks like Mopani, slate and quartz gravel with local stick and algae. Not a true NA biotope, but the fish won't care. How many gallons is it again?

The Tank is a 75 gallon breeder tank. The driftwood is not mopani. I don't like the feel of mopani even though it is beautiful. The rocks are pond pebbles. I will cover the pebbles with mud possibly about an 1/2 of an inch or 1 inch. I want to give the fish time to adjust. Thanks for the comments.

You dont really want mud over gravel. It makes it possible for toxic gasses to get build up in your substrate and if it gets disturbed you have a Chernobyl biotope. Gravel over mud on the other hand is fine.

Thank you for the info. What about just the mud and nothing else for the bottom? I got mud today. I was surprised to see quite a bit of pebbles, sand and grit mixed together with the mud. I will either have the mud all over the bottom or just around the driftwood and lightly scattered over the remaining bottom. I also found an amazing piece of driftwood. I am not sure if I will use it for this tank. It is large and wide.

Mud alone is fine and if it is made up of varying size grains and pebbles it will usually settle out so that the smaller pieces go to the bottom. The only time you run into a problem is if you completely cover gravel with a great deal of sand or mud and create trapped pockets.

Okay gang, tank is re-done. I am waiting for the mud to clear. I had mud left and almost threw it out, I thought well use it anyway. I was hand scopping and found a clam. I decided to use the GIGANTIC piece of driftwood I found in the lake. Even though the tank is a 75 gallon breeder, the driftwood length wise is 3/4 of the tank. I chose to put it in a corner. The wood has a very large hole at the bottom, so the fish can swim through. The wood is actually has 2 limbs sticking out of water. I have to figure out what to use for the glass cover, because of the limbs. I can't put the light fixture on. I will take pics soon, do I can get a judgement from everyone. If I can tweak this tank enough, it's going to be entered in a competition. Funny thing, I caught fish on Sunday, the fish are at the glass looking at me and waiting for food already. I also caught a musk turtle. This particular one is the most aggressive I have ever seen! I would rank this turtle with the snapping turtle. Today, it has figured out that I give food. The turtle eats a tremendous amount of food and definately not under weight. She ate 5 Earthworms, 15 waxworms, 4 beetles, and 8 superworms within 20 minutes and still looking for food!
