my blue gill has fin rot help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Put him in a QT tank that has similar water qualities as the tank he is in, slowly raise the temp and add api aquarium salt and keep an eye on him. If it is severe, you may be able to buy something for it to treat it faster.

You might get away with a bucket, but every QT experience that I did in a bucket always ended up killing the fish. How big is the blue gill? If it is small enough you could go to petco and pick up a 10 gallon tank for 10$.

yea. this is killing me. his tail is getting smaller and smaller...but if i get a tank i need a filter too right? because they need airated water right? so thats like 20 bucks. man o man!

On a budget, too eh? I'm a member of the same club!

I'd just trim the tail off to stop the rot. Don't cut into the meat of the fish, leave a little bit of the tail there and the whole thing will grow back as long as you do it right. Then you don't need any meds or anything.

You did check the water parameters, correct? Ammonia, nitrItes, nitrAtes, pH, etc.? If the water quality is poor in the main tank, the infection will just start again anyway.

I wouldn't cut the fins, a unsterilized utensil will expose the fish to further problems, and if cut too short will surely expose it to infection. If the rot is only a few millimeters into the fin than sure, but you should still add some API salt.

I would cut the fin because my tools are sterile and my water is pristine. Speak for yourself, Captain Dirt.

Fin rot is a bacterial infection normally caused by poor water quality. You can treat the fish in a quarantine tank but it will reappear if the conditions causing the infection doesn't change. I would increase water changes, ensure that I'm not over feeding the fish, and treat with an antibiotic like Marycyn.
