Sounds like they are getting ready to breed. They might not stay near the hole, but it's there when they're ready. Also, the male might be ready to breed and be bugging the female who might not be ready. Only time will tell I guess.

Do you have pics of your bluegills btw, Ive never seen bluegills in an aquarium.
