Well craigslist was pretty good to me last night, I was able to pic up 2 55 gallons a 20L a double 55 stand my heaters listed below, and the pump for 90 bucks. So heres the start of my first build thread. The general gist is im going to take my mbuna show tank, split it up into 6 species specific tanks and from there work on breeding. Heres what I got so far.

tanks
3x 30gals- 1 free 2 15$ a piece
2x 20L- 1 free 1 10$
1x55g- 30$

Filtration
sump off my 125- free depending on how you look at it
Iwaki md-40RT pump-30$
2x 300w hydor theo heaters- free

Ill get some pics tonight of the test fills and everything else. Im hoping to go pick up the wood for the stand and PVC for the plumbing tonight.

Well last night I got most of my plumbing bought, Started resealing one of the 55s I got and painted the back of the other and repainted the stand. I didnt get near as far as I wanted to in the tank flip flop process but youll have that.

I do have a question though with the heating. My heaters are 16" or so long. The water area of my sump is only 12w and about 14L. It has egg crate and a vertical sponge in it directly below the the far side of the bio chamber. My guess is one last step in mechanical filtration before the pump. Heres a link to when I was going to sell it to show a pic. http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=261222

So as I see it I have two options,

1. remove the sponge and forget about it.
2. make a new sump since I dont like how this one is done anyway.

The new sump would be a 31 gallon rubber maid tub, with a storage shelf bio and mechanical chamber, with bulk heads going out to the pump. This would give me plenty of room for my heaters. Its main down fall is I cant see inside it as easy.

It just all depends on what you want to do. The sponge can be very helpful in preventing debris from getting to the pump.

If you feel it would be better to make a new one.....go for it.

Alright so for the updates. Ill get the pics up tonight. My work computer doesnt like the .RAW format pics. So for progress to start I had to get a few thinks in order.

1. move my 30g grow out tank full of african fry of various types. on the bottom of my double stand. I cant take the tank down cause I dont have anywhere to put the fish yet, so I had move it to the side.

1.5 Paint the background of one of the new 55s black

2. take down the 55 on top of the stand with my devil, GT, and hornet cichlid, endli, and monster pleco. This was a good time. I didnt get pics of this but I put every fish in its own bucket. the only one that didnt jump out was the devil. This is because he was occupied by beating upthe GT that jumped INTO his bucket. All this happened while I was up stairs and the hornet cichlid flopped a ways away from the bucket. I almost lost him. All is well now though, everyone made it to thier new tank.

3. Move the old stand out and new double 55 stand in. I then brought in one of the 55s I got and filled it and put all of the above fish in it so I could finish tearing the existing one down to paint the background black.

4. Move it back down stairs (by my self this time, thats always fun) and set it back up to move my new Black Rohm who has been in a holding tank for a couple weeks in it. All this time all of the water and gravel from the original 55 was pumped into a barrel to hold it and keep the BB alive in the gravel to jump start the new systems. Each 55 was then filled halfway with old water and half with new to basically do a 50% water change.

Phew, now that the prelim stuff was done I could start on the actual system build.
Almost everything in this system was repurposed equipment I already had except, 2-55s the heaters, and the pump and most of the piping that will be in the filtration system. All of the wood, other tanks, and filtration was junk I had sitting around, so this build will cost a minimal amount when its done (that’s the plan anyway).

I started stripping the seals and trim on the other 55 I got last week, got it sealed up Thursday night and got the new trim on Sunday. I started leak testing it last night and this morning when I left for work I had no leaks!!. Im probably going to wait until everything else is done to drain that one and move it in, just to be sure.

After that I started building the stand, I got all of my sub assemblies ( legs, top and bottom) and got the first coat of spray paint on them last night.

In order of appearance:

1. Original grow out setup african fry on the bottom. SA on top

2. Job supervisor, she keeps me in line

3. This is my 125 that is an odd catch all. So far its worked out, this project is to break it up into seperate tanks and move my SA Cichlids into it.

4. Fishies in grow out

5. yay for not soaking my driftwood long enough, heres the holding tank for all the water.

6. New stand and 55 the SA cichlids are here now later this will be my front specific tank later when the shifty puzzle is done.

7.This was supposed to be a picture of my beautiful fiance, who loves me enough to let all this happen, almost unquestionably. I left it out under threat of death lol. instead you get a picture of jesus riding a raptor.

8.These are the results of me moving my 6" rohm

9. This is my African show tank. Im taking this down and putting angels and severums in it. alot of the breeders are coming from it to. They breed constantly now but that pike is population control now lol.

10. double 55 stand you cant see it but theres a rohm in the top.

11. where the new systems going.

more hopefully tomorrow

just crap camera phone pics. Im making my self do something every day on this build so I can get it done. Last night I made the first overflow.

When you guys make your pvc overflows what do you use to keep them straight up and down? or at least close to it. Mine hangs at an angle, Im sure I can rig something up but just wondering.

anyway, heres the tank I resealed (holding water for 5 days now) over flow, and me finding the wonder in framing clamps.
