My Cichlid tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The tanks and the fish look great, I wish I had bigger tanks but I could only fit a 75 and a 110 against our garage wall. :(

I like your fish, but the first tank is so sparsely decorated.
And is the water just a little cloudy?
I would glue some sand or small stones to the pvc pipes and arrange one big piece of wood behind it
and add some ( fake) plants.

I do have wood that I put in but took out just before the pictures as I cleaned the tank.

I don't use plants as after trying with them previously the fish just move them to the outside edges of the tank as they likdvthe large swimming space. I do so want the pipes smooth as the black ghost knife fish has poor vision and rubs himself over the pipes when lights go out.

I have tried everything with the water but unfortunately having large eartheaters I cannot keep the water clear due to them picking up the sand, rising towards the top of the tank and then filtering it through their gills.

I run 2 fluval FX6 filters which are regularly maintained.

The only way I will get clear water is to remove the sand and have a bare base.

Hi,
I suppose you tried other substrates?
A friend of mine has some Geophagus and uses pool filter sand that is sold washed and flamedried.
No cloudy water in there.
Sorry for your knife fish.

Don't worry about the knife fish, they naturally have poor vision and use a type of sonar to move around. Mine has just got into the habit of going over the pipes as that is where he lives.

I have tried different sands and this is better than the previous type of sand I had. I would like to use a different substrate but the geophagus need the sand as they filter it through their gills naturally.

I have 2 of the biggest filters possible running and do 50% water changes regularly which costs me a fortune as I am on a water meter on my water changes on my tanks are about 700 litres at a time!

I have sand in the other tanks and don't have any issues but that is because there are no geos dropping it through the water.
