Hi all,
My convict fry are about 10 days old and are still with both parents in a separate tank.
When should I take the convict parents out of the tank or maybe just the male. Now? or a few days? Please help as I am worried the parents may start to eat them.
Thanks

hi.
i took mine out after about a week, although the fry did not grow too much. even so, i saw a noticeable decrease in the fry count though. i dont think it was their parenting to blame. if i had to guess, it was probably because they are stubborn to what i feed them. (hikari floating cichlid pellets) im not sure why they wont eat those, but they dont. i'd say a good time would be couple weeks, but it's up to u.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. We are feeding them the bloodworms and flakes and can actually see them eating the flakes.

It is the fry's nature to stay on the bottom, so going to the surface to feed is the wrong idea. Anything that sinks is ok if it is ground up small enough. Food flakes put into a blender or coffee grinder will do just fine. Grind the food to the point just before it is a powder. It can then be fed to them all the way to adulthood. For the first week though, crush it the rest of the way to a powder by rolling it between your fingers.

my fry is three and a half weeks old right now and they are still in the same tank with the adults..........i think IMO that they do a great job of keeping them alive and i prolly won't remove them for another week or two........

your losing fry because they are not gonna go to the surface to eat.....i have mine on crushed up flake and bloodworms and they're loving it.......also what size hikari pellets are you using? they could be too big for the fry to eat.......

hi ime, the frys are BETTER off alone with their parents.
convicts do very very good at parenting. if u dont know, the parents can grind up pellets and blow it where the swarm of frys are.

If the fry and the parents are in a tank with no other fish, then leave alone the parents will do fine with them. If you want them to breed again; remove the fry into a bare bottom tank and feed flake food just grind into smaller pieces with your fingers.

sorry i if i confused you douge. the ones who weren't eating were the parents. i think the problem was the parents weren't eating, so they got hungry. i use hikari first bites that sink to the bottom for the fry, but for the parents, the pellets are very small, since my cons are only 2.5" they still wont eat them though. any ideas?

i'd say bloodworms or even sinking pellets of krill...
