Everyone else is having wonderful luck breeding convicts...but me!
It's been 2 weeks now and nothing. My second try yet. I have one male and female. Male is 2.5 inches the female 1.5-2 inches. Yet they show no signs of coloring up after a couple weeks of feeding them frozen brine, Omega one cichlid flakes, and snipped mealworms. Maybe the female has fattened up a little, but she was chubby to begin with. They aren't aggressive to eachother at all. Infact, they follow eachother around somewhat. When seperated for more than a few minutes the swim up to eachother flaring, but don't strike or anything. So...what I want to know is how does a pair start? How long from meeting? What did you feed them? For how long? Did they color up within a few days? Thanks....

although i kow that females that size do breed you might want to give her a bit more time to grow up, ive seen 1 1/2" spawn like my daughter who bred her convicts, but ive also seen 2 1/2" never have spawned before spawn one day. this may sound stupid but are u sure you have a male nd female? dont go by just the finnage...

my first fish were convicts I had them for three months they were both about 3 inces befor they bread. Convicts bread like rabbits paticence they will breed. As far as feeding them I feed them whatever I had flakes and goldfish Patience they will bread

the male has a long pointy dorcel fin the female will have a round one if there male and female they will bread. Are you sure you have a male and female?

relax its only two weeks. Like someone stated before 1.5" may be a tad small. make sure you got one with a pink belly. This one will be your female. Sometimes my convicts will breed in a couple days and others have taken upto a couple months. There not humans they dont just shag everything around they bond and then mate. make sure ur temp is around 76-78* do a 25% water change. if that dont get them goin then the female more than likely hasnt reached sexual maturity yet.

as long sa you got convicts in water and a warm temperature you WILL have babies.

good luck

Yeah I'm positive I've got a male and female. The male has long finnage, less color, a pinkish hue, and a hump on it's head. The female has rounded fins, orange belly, and much more color. Maybe I'm just being impatient. But after hearing a million times "convicts are the easiest fish to breed" and "mine spawned in the bag on the way home" I guess I just expect a little too much. I mean they are cichlids, not guppies or anything.

pinkis hue? do u have any pics of ur setup? fish?

Sorry, I have no pics. But just noticed...after looking up pictures of male convicts they don't really have a pinkish hue to them. The one on my male is quite obvious. And his hump is large for a small convict.

Ive got 2 pairs and the both spawned within a few days of each other, now the larger pair are about to spawn again but the smaller pair wont get along with each other so i had to separate them, the female was 1.5 when she spawned her first time but now she dont seem to want to. When i see the female color up and get a fat belly shes ready and stick her with the male and they spawn within a week.
