my crayfish (wild caught) used to be red-brown like a normal cray. I put in some new gravel 2 days ago and last night he molted. the gavel is black. Why is he blue. He is almost 4"now, he was due for a molt it had been bout 1.5-2 months. was it the chande in substrat color(it used to be bare), age, size ?

no i feed him algea tabs as well as peices of frozen golden shiners. He eats a lot. but he looks really cool.

i used to keep a few in my feeder vat and every one would turn blue and die shortly after

great thanks for the good news!lol

ya hes doing fine there is no change is behavior.

Crayfish will change color to match their bottom, blue is as close to black as it gets, They also will do this when they molt, If its soft and blue this means that its pigment hasent colored up yet, blue is a lack of pigment in crayfish and crabs, shrimp etc. This could be because of a lack of calicum in the tank, crush up some egg shells washed of course and add them to the tank they will dissolve over time and it will add enough calicum to you water for your cray to molt safely. The egg shells is an old salt water trick for corals.
