Hello everyone

I decided to do a 10watts LED lighting on my 75.

I bought 2 10w LED with heat sink on Ebay from HK for 24 bucks.

I found some used 12v power supply at 850mA
I bought some chrome plated bowl as a reflector. ( 1.98 at petsupply plus each)

Total cost about 28 bucks, ( power supply was free, i found it at some shelf not being used) Im not sure how long they will last but will see!

Comments, suggestion, etc are welcome.

Here is the outcome: the ones on the right side of tank. ( the flood light on the left side of the tank is also 10w led but its slightly more yellowish)

So those LED's require 12v 850mA? Most LED's need less then 12volts.

I am not sure, im not good with electronics but I just read the specs, yes they are 12v and i think they require minimum or 800mA max at 1000mA.

Again Im not expert, this is my just my DIY experiment. Im using 850mA on one of them and the heat sink gets very hot compare to the other one that i am running 800mA but the 850 is brighter. I hope it wont kill the LED because of the high temp.

Sounds like you are ok on supply, the heat sink is going to be warm from giving off heat. The higher the mA the brighter it will be but have more heat. Heat can shorten the life if it's really hot.

A safe bet would be to get larger heat sinks, especially if you want to go brighter.

I think im very satisfied with the brightness right now, will see how the plants react. I guess ill have to look around the "junk yard" and find a bigger heat sink

i love how simple your setup is. i am wondering what is the see through material that sits right below the leds to protect it? is it plexi glass?

UPDATE:

I just ran the LED's today for 2.5 hours and they get very very very hot, even the power supply gets very very very HOT....

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS.... it is way too risky.. Im going to cut those power supply and order some LED drivers that will run cooler, I can't risk getting fire.

You definitely need a better heat sink with more fins on it. What are the power supplies for? they do get warm but seems like they shouldn't get that hot.

I prefer the chinese 10w like the grey one you have. why do all the extra work. you can get them on ebay for $25!
