Here is my DIY garbage can filter and the steps to create it.
1 x 44 gallon Rubbermaid round trashcan

Cut out preformed sections in bottom for the drains which will simply drop into the sump as the can will be sitting on top of the 90 gallon sump section.

Cut out bottom plate with center overflow support.

Used muti-use PVC glue to attach the legs to the bottom plate for support.

Placed bottom plate inside can.

Overflow pipe (2" PVC) notched at the bottom for drainage.

Used a 2" to 3" converter and a 4" cap to create a top cap to prevent water from going down the overflow when not needed.
Cap is glued to the converter but DO NOT GLUE TO 2" OVERFLOW.

Openeing the case of scrubbies

They come in nice little nylon socks filled with 10 each. Which makes stacking them very easy.

Starting to fill with media.

One case down one to go.

Last section done. 2 cases of scrubbies. 48 pcs each case x 2 = 96 pcs x 10 = 960 scrubbies total.

Cut top/drip plate out. Make final adjustments, then cut out center for overflow and install.

Cap installed. NOT GLUED

That is pretty much all I got now.
I am still deciding on the lid modifications for the can. I will be using floor scrubbers as a difuser/water displacment media to help get the water spread out more. I am also still trying to determine the best way to get the water spread out as much as possible. One thought it to have the water to come down directly over the top cap and splash off that down into the media.
Still working that part out.

Some home stores just sell a sheet of plastic. Its not see through, but it should work after drilling holes as a way to spread water around the top.

yeah ive seen the plastic pegboard at lowes, its about $12. if i was gonna do a DIY sump, i would definately use that for a drip tray...

Awesome!!!!
