I wasn't sure if I should have posted this in the DIY forum or the lessons learned forum. I'm just finishing up building a tankstand for my 55gal, and after looking over my reciepts I've spent $147.55. I still have to return a 2x6 and some handles that I decided not to use, and pick up some hidden latches, so the total may change. Anyway, I was thinking of posting this in the lessons learned because I built the stand in the aftermath of one of the worst hurricance seasons ever. It didn't really dawn on me until I added up my expenses and was wondering why I spent so much. :duh: I feel like such a dumbass, I built this thing because I wanted to save money, but I ended up spending as much or more for what I could have bought a professionally built one.

Another lesson learned is that I'm not much of a carpenter. :duh:

Pics may come later, I'm hoping for a digi cam for Christmas.

I tried to follow this guy's instructions^, but I modified it slightly. I changed the door design and the trim, and I put my crossbeam braces on the upper frame box instead of the lower, and I used heavy-duty metal tee joist supports instead of the dinky little tee's he used.

His stand looks a lot better than mine, though. In fact, if I saw my stand for sale for the price that I paid for all my materials, I wouldn't buy it. :(

But on the bright side of things, Big Al's is having an end of the year sale. They have a 125gal tank, stand, lid and light strip on sale for $450. :naughty:

Well next time you can build an even better one, lol
PICS PICS PICS pls.

Sorry you messed up your first project, dont worry it gets easier with practice.post pics its prolly not that bad.
Btw thanks for the link thats a great design.

I wouldnt worry to much, I spent waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much building my 120 stand, going on tips from a friend(whos a welder, not a carpenter). Plus i screwed up on a piece or two of cabinet grade Plywood to.

gonna have to put pics of mine up! im a house builder anyway and my materials cost me a few screws! that design is way to over the top. i made a tank stand for my large tank and thats about 220 gallons! i only used 5x2's and only used 6 lengths.

Well, we got a camera, so here's the stand. The first pic shows the front of the stand, the second pic is looking through the left door, and the third pic is looking in from behind.

I bought some more trim and asked my friend for some help, so we should be re-doing it pretty soon. Then I can sand and stain it.

Its not bad, just add some trim around the edge of the doors and it will not look plain.
Good luck.

Well, I got the hidden latches put in, so now the doors stay closed. And, I started to re-do the trim. One more trip to the hardware store, and I should be done with this. I'll post pics when I finish the trim.

I don't think its bad at all. Just throw some paint or stain on there maybe a little trim like Rust9000 said, and your in bussiness.

I think thats a great stand. It's amazing what a little trimwork and paint can do.Nice stand can't wait to see the finished pics!
