My Dovii and Mida have paired up

My 13" male dovii and 8" female mida have laid their first batch of eggs and noticed the mida is looking a little beat up. The dovii is also showing some battle wounds around the mouth. Is this normal for cichlids when spawning?

I never planned for this to happen and always thought my mida was a male. Explains why my dovii tolerated the mida out of all the other cichlids i had in the tank. Any suggestions on what to do? Im happy to keep them as a pair but I'm now worried about one getting hurt.

Yup normal for spawning cichlids. One of the tests they do to test each other for compatibility.

The eggs the mida laid are starting to go bad, but she continues to still protect them. Does this mean the dovii may not be fertile? Not sure on what i should do?

Either the water conditions are not right for fertilization or it may take many more tries if they even produce fry. Not much you can do.

Water conditions are fine. I have a jag pair spawning successfully running on the same system.
