Im getting so fustrated with my pair, I introduced the female to my male in Dec. and she has layed 4 times now. First time behind the divder he didnt fertalize them, she eat them. Second time she layed and eat them right away, third time she layed on the glass floor he fertilized them and kept her away from them and on the 4 day one of them eat them. This week she layed them on her divded side he did not fertalize them went white and she eat them, ahhhh.

Why are they not working together? What is the lonhest some of you have seen it take for a pair to bond? Im considering geting rid.of her and growing another female.

Do you guys think I should wait longer to see if they get it right?

Male 8 inch female 6

If she is laying eggs she is doing her part, getting rid of her isn't the problem solver. He may not be mature enough to spawn as he is only 8 inches. cut holes in the divider just large enough for her to get through and let her do as she pleases. Patience is a virtue grasshopper. Good luck!

It took my pair 4 tries before they got it right. Patience is key! I thought my male was infertile for the longest time lol. I almost got rid of them when I decided to give them one more chance and voila! And they even got it wrong afterwards, so IMO, I think they just need to mature..

I understand she is a good egg layer, but why dosnt she want to lay with him and work together with him to protect the eggs?. It seems she feels threaten buy him, which goes back to my question, how long can it take before a pair bonds?

Right.on the money you gotta be patient it will happen when it does you will not know what.to dobwith.all the babies. My pair was never divided they spawned when my male was like.8" but the spawn didnt go well til the male figured that the female was supposed to help. Dovii are a challenge that why i love em. Good luck with your pair and dont rush it.

Time and size at maturity is relative to the fish. Each one is different, there are only guidelines..We dont know exactly how old the fish is, so thats basically out the window. When you see your male making practice passes, he is learning and getting better everytime..

I think people often confuse the term "pair bond" as well. Pair bonding beyond several weeks is a result of captivity. Sure some fish decide not to kill their mates for several years, but just as many do not work out past a few spawning sessions. So I would not ever count on a pair being "bonded", especially such large and capable fish as dovii.

Thanks for the replys. I would like them to just have the tank together with no divder. Im not a fan of divided tanks. I will wait awhile, but I think a solo fish is great to, they pay more attention to me lol

Huh? I've had 2 litters or clutches of babies from my Dovii's years ago and my male was only 6-7 inches at the time.
