Bay Area, CA
500 gallon 96 x 48 x 25 Tall
cichlids-grammodes, istlanum, fasciatus, motaguense, and a few jack dempseys. all male!!!
bottom feeders-striped and spotted raphaels, and a synodontis catfishes.
dithers- large school of silver dollars.
I wonder if it would work out or if im in over my head given the similarity of my choice of cichlids.

i bought a 2" raphael today and 2-1.5" green terrors. i had them in a bucket of half there water and half new tanks water, left them in there alittle longer then i had planned (zoned out) and i come back and there are no green terrors. i was shocked. now the raphael is in his new tank, passed out from over eating

I would keep an eye on the istlanum and grammode, they're too closely related and very similiar in aggression.

i just pick up a tank with exact diminsions, its a beast, but the biggest i could fit through a conventional doorway

@ freshwaterpredators- at what length were you able to sex your umbees? and all the cichlids I mentioned above are very similar in final length, speed, and temperment. I agree that the nandopsis's would be the ones to keep an eye on.

In a large growout com I can tell most males at around 2" otherwise to be sure I vent at around 3-3.5" and I would love to do a com like yours but unfortunately all I'm keeping ATM are pairs and if I was to do a 300 or bigger it would be for umbee or dovii pair;) down the road I plan on trying a com with growouts from all my pairs just to see how things work

@ lostnight- yep hemichromis fasciatus. if im not mistaken, thats a fasicatus in your avatar right? i

Nope, never had the pleasure. That is a Hemichromis frempongi in my avatar. I've also kept the elongatus before, but never have I laid eyes upon a Hemichromis fasciatus in person.
