My Fatty

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice. A happy eel's gotta have a bit of girth! What's on its menu?

I've a TT and am always looking for meal options.

Thanks guys. I will try to get some better pictures of him soon.

As far as his diet goes, he, and my other large fire eel (not as big as this guy though), eats frozen krill, frozen mysis shrimp, frozen bloodworms, nibbles of frozen beef heart, frozen cut up market shrimp and live red wigglers. Absolutely no pellets though, they refuse them.

Also, I feed the two larger fire eels every other day. My smaller one is only eating red wigglers at the moment, in the quarantine tank, and eats 8-10 average size red wigglers.

Sounds like a good variety :). I've heard spiny eels really go for frozen krill, but haven't tried that yet.

I've never had any luck getting a spiny eel onto pellets either, though I'm going to try again next week. My current TT used to refuse everything but bloodworms (no access to red wriggles anymore), so I tried the old trick of thawing tilapia chunks with blood worms. Now he takes big chunks of tilapia "straight up" lol. Think I'll try the same method with pellets and see what happens.

Here are the best I could get. He was out today for a brief period in the plants. For size comparison, I put my had in one of the pictures and I have large hands that often don't fit in XL gloves.

Here are a few dark pictures with flash.

Mind you, he's only 12" long but has girth that's probably comparable to some 18-20" fire eels. You can see my other one in a few of the pictures. They are both about the same length, but the bigger one has much more girth. One last thing, these pictures are about two days after his last feeding. If I can, I will get some pictures when I feed him tonight so you can really see his stomach bulge. Lol
