Got this Mayan a couple months ago. Was sold as a "True Festae." It was cheap, and I knew it was a Mayan. So no harm done.

Anyway, its a jerk of a fish. Almost killed my GT, and when I put it in a new tank, it killed and ate all the dithers (some pretty big barbs). And now it fights with my pleco over the cave.

Trying to get rid of this fish currently, but figured I'd post some pics for you all since it is a nice looking fish. I just don't have room for the jerk.

Flaring at me (end of flare, camera wasn't fast enough)

Please excuse the janky pics. I don't have a big fancy camera like some of you on here. It's a point and snap junker hahaha

Completely agree. This one's got some really cool oranges and blues. Just can't even compare to a true Festae.

But IMHO, they are better looking than 95% of the other CA/SA cichlids out there.

have to agree theyre awesome....

I was also sold some "true festae" that were mayans lol
Im growing them out with real festae in my 135g

I feel theyre very underrated also and beautiful fish
I think they just get compared to true festae too often to be appreciated

Did your source get it from Segrest Farms? I bought one of their "Red Terrors" and it definitely has some Mayan in it, but I think it may be a hybrid because it has a lot of blue pearls. Actually it was this website that first suggested it was a hybrid. It was something like $2 wholesale at 1". If yours has lots of blue it may be the same source. Segrest supplies stores all over the country including most chains like Petco.

It was from a place in cincinati. It was a trade in from another customer who couldn't house it because it was too big for their small tank.

much respect to the mayan. I have had a few and its a bad as fish that can hold its own with some of the most aggressive cichlids. Cant compare to a festea tho
