So I had an egg crate separating the two, today I noticed the female FH laid eggs. Do I remove the Divider now? I actually did remove it and now they're lip-locking. What should I do next?

make sure the egg is fertilized (tan color) the white eggs will eventually get eaten by the parent. once the eggs hatch move the male to another tank for temporary and let the female take care of the baby until they are freely swimming up and down. once the frys get to about .5 inches move them to a 10-20 gallon with a sponge filter then throw the male back with the female with the eggcrate. if the female tube drops again let it loose.

IME you need to drop the divider when her tube is down but before she lays.. That's why they're lip locking. I don't think you'll get these fertilized.

I agree with cichlaguapote: In my experience, unless the male can get to the eggs, the will not be fertilized. In terms of color of the eggs, my female vieja laid a bunch of eggs and all were tan for nearly a week. There was no male present.

i see...i guess it was too late...i'll know next time to remove the divider before the eggs are laid...when do you guys think the tube will drop again? how often does it happen? i have another female in a different tank by itself, will her tube drop even if she's all by herself?

christ4paul, thanks for that info...hope i'll use that info one of these days :)

She could be ready in 2weeks-month again. You need to make sure her tube is fully dropped, then drop the divider, the mating process that happens while she lays the eggs is very important to getting him to fertilize them.

what if i just take the divider out permanently? there wasn't a divider before, they were together peacefully for weeks...they would clash once in a while but nothing major...fins were all fine etc. but i had to put the divider because the male kept chasing the female a couple of weeks ago and the female kept hiding under the sponge filter breathing heavily.

Sounds to me like she's not safe without the divider, which is how it goes for most pairs that are undivided and not spawning. If your fish are fine without the divider then you should be able to leave them without a divider. But if your female has to hide then it sounds like the divider might be a good idea.

o ok...so i guess that would have continued if i had not put the divider in?......they were doin so fine in the beginning too....but i guess that was when they were still getting treated for hex....when the male got cured and started eating, for some reason he would not let the female eat.....that was actually the only time he would chase her down....when she tries to eat...then she hides under the sponge filter.

Yep then I would divide them.. even if it's just food related aggression. One of them could get hurt if you don't.
