this is my fh that has decided that he will not eat pellets anymore..i have tried starving him for 2 weeks!i even witnessed it to grow weaker because of starvation.during that fasting period,i always put a pellet in it's tank atleast every 3days but it won't take it...so i was the one who gave up,don't want to lose him...for more than 1 month,i have been feeding him worms and some gut loaded(fed with high quality pellets) guppies, which is in fact part of my collection.haha!

now i know that worms and live fish can't match the nutritional value of pellets, what do you think is the best way to provide my fh the nutrition he needs?for now,all i do is feed the worms and guppies the fh pellets that i feed my other fh's..but i am not sure if that is working.i haven't given up yet,i still put pellets it's tank just in case.

also,i bought this one as a female, but as it grows,i am not really sure, looks like a male...

it has spots on it's dorsal when it was younger so that's why we assumed it was a female.guess that really proves that it is not the best way to tell it's female.haha!

What are the parameters of the tank?
well i had a similar problem with a jack dempsey, what food are you feeding? my jack quit eating pellets at 2" and i starved him for about 3 weeks, but i gave in, now he is about 6" and i have been using nls and he loves that stuff. He won't eat it when i am in the room but if i drop it in and walk away he is picking at the ground. I would try feeding nls thera or the large cichlid. If he won't eat that after 2 weeks, then i would feed him homeade food (i used shrimp, white fish, scallopes, spinach, garlic, peas, and some unflavored gelatin.), and very his diet with some blood worms, or i prefer mysis shrimp but only a good brand like piscine, they have whole mysis shrimp and they are very very healthy.

go to a lfs that has a good variety of commercial food. Buy several small containers of different stuff. It's going to be harder to get her back on commercial since she got a taste of live, but can be done.

I fed my fh sinking tablets, now she takes floating meat sticks. She will take almost anything to a point. Every couple months for the last 2 years I've put new things in her diet so she didn't get stuck on just one type.

my one tank gets majority frozen...my fault due to me giving in a long time ago. Will take commercial, as a snack kinda

maybe try frozen stuff. then work your way back to commercial. Thats how I got my one big catfish to eat when he was small

it did take shrinking pellets a few weeks ago,but then also gave it up..i have several types of foods in store for my other fh's..all of it she won't take it in..

Im just wondering why live fish, plant matter and insects wouldnt be as nutritional as a pellet to a flowerhorn since the fish they are made of most likely ate that in the wild and adapted there bodies to eating tose types of food? If you feed your fish live fish, never feed goldfish or similar species to any cichlid. They have something in them (forgot the name) that can cause HITH.

i agree with you,i wonder the same the thing..i think it's only bad when the live food you feed them was not fed, therefore does not have the nutrition to sustain the eater,or when they are just treated as feeders.
that's why i care for my "feeders" just as i do with my other fishes.
