This is just a teaser. ;) I still need to finish stripping and resealing the tank and buy some pond foam and black silicone before I can really get started, but I had to share.

I am setting up this tank for my classroom - I teach 4th and 5th grade plus science at a public school - and want it to be something special. After talking with Matt at Designs by Nature I drove down to their shop. I can't say enough nice things about this guy... He had some great ideas on how to put things together and I am super excited about how it is going to turn out. He also gave us a great deal, threw in some broken pieces and went the extra mile to ensure that this project was going to look awesome and stay within our budget.

The tank itself if a vintage (built in July of 1970) 110G Long, 72x18x20. It was built with 1/2" glass and no braces across the top. I had added a glass center brace twenty years ago when I acquired the tank because I didn't like the way it bowed out 1/4" in the center. I removed it for the rebuild, but will add another one in, to allow for split lids if nothing else.

There will be a DIY overflow/filter sock/heater compartment on the left side and some return plumbing on the right, all hidden by the background. This is going to be all new to me, the first thing I need to do is read the sticky...

Here are some photos of the DBN goodies, and a basic (very basic) idea of how it will go together.

Awesome! I wanted a 3d background, but I'm not sure I can give up the tank space.

I've always wanted to do something interesting like that as a background... but just find that some take up a little more space than i would like... although loving what you have there so far... can't wait to see if put together the way its meant to be...

I know what you mean, this is going to take up quite a bit of room. This is my first one and I am building it knowing that I will be losing a lot of space.

Luckily my students are young enough that they don't care I'm not hot...

damn man nice living room holy hell
Living room?!?
That's my garage, my wife would not be letting our living room look like that. If I was single, it probably wouldn't be far off, though... :nilly:

The truth is it wasn't really meant to go together - what I have is a background panel and parts from a couple of other backgrounds, plus some odds and ends. I am excited to see how it comes together, I wish I had a few days off to work on it...

I actually like the mix matched look of that. Looks like you can do some good experimenting with depth with it.

Very nice! Hopefully the kids will realize how special that tank will be.

Those are some really nice pieces. I am starting a Business that puts fish tanks in classrooms. Thier are grants that teachers can use to put pets in their class. Some of the standards for kindergarten are living animals. I take old 10 gals i find on Craigs list, build a rock wall background, and put guppy's (live breeders), snails, ghost shrimp, and African dwarf frogs in. This gives a variety of animals so different types of animals can be discussed. I also provide the teacher with a few lesson plans centered around the tank. I have yet to put one together for an older class. I know in high school they address the nitrogen cycle. I would just need to write up a lesson for it. Fish tanks are the ultimate low maintenance pet for classrooms. Good luck with this. I would also love to hear about some of the lesson that use the tank.
