Just completed my first sump for my 6ft 110gal, needed to go for some sort of filtration that was cheaper than cannisters. (they're rediculously expensive in Aus).
Decided to use two Nylex storage containers for the setup:

the use of the bulkheads (actually drains for bathtubs but they had nice strainers on them) acts like a baffle, the water has to travel through the media and up to the first drain, then it travels to the bottom of the second container and has to move up through the media again:

the container on the right up close:

it is a small wet/dry area, i used shade cloth for the media to drip through. will see if it ends up working. it drips into the tub below which has more shade cloth, the water strains through here and out the bottom:

the water should then drain through the bottom of the tub and then through the gutter gaurd. i cut up lengths to fit in the container, not sure how this stuff will work either but it looks as though when squashed together it has a decent amount of surface area.:

i used 4 rolls of 8 meters, so 32 meters by 18 cm.

To the over flow, this was an interesting task as i initially designed it to suck from the bottom of the tank and use the siphon break as the point at which the overflow would cut off...:

didnt work quite like i planned, once we removed the air pockets we confirmed that it was that there wasnt enough head from the water line to the siphon break, so it only trickled, arr:irked:. so we just decided to go with a traditional overflow:

we attached two peices of wood to the undeside of the rim of the containers to add structural support and use as handles for moving around, as seen in the second picture.
annoyingly though when we filled the containers up one had a small crack in the bottom corner which had to be siliconed up (should have tested that right afte we bought them lol),
this is the outlet plumbed and drilled into the stand:

here is the outlet in action, had to add a small extension to stop the splashing:

and here is the whole sump under the tank ( with no fishies in yet):

reasonably well hidden for no doors. how does this look? anything i should add, take away?

so far so good, only been up for about 4 hours though lol so cant really tell. tanks been sitting there for about a month so i chucked the filter muk from another tank in to try and get some seeding happening.

Just an update. I wasnt getting the full flow from the overflow initially so we had to clamp the pump. But we worked out that there wasnt enough water above the inlet so we sliced it down a fraction, now its working perfectly. some pictures.

The tank all set up with first occupants: (Oscar, 2 Silver Dollars, Convict, and Common Pleco):

The pleco's already making a mess pooping everywhere after eating all the nice gunk off the wood!
