Hi. My wife and I recently took our son to the pet store and walked out with our first Flowerhorn. Unfortunately, we were not able to get much information or history about the fish from the store, so I'm hoping the forum can give us some feedback and help us identify it. He is about 5 inches long... age is unknown. He is currently living solo in a 55 gallon tank. The store sold us some Hai Feng Best Color floating pellets and we also have Hikari Cichlid Staple food on hand. Temp is kept around 84o F. Last time I tested PH I think it came in around 7.2 but my kit is very old so I don't know how accurate it is. Thanks in advance.

Any feedback about the health? Colors? Is it a Red Dragon Flowerhorn? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

It's a red dragon, probably around 6 months old with nice color and very healthy looking

Paid $180 for him. Wife thinks I'm crazy for paying that much. Hoping to eventually find a female and breed him to offset the cost.

Very nice for your first flowerhorn...bit pricey though, but maybe that's the going rate in the east coast.

Hate to burst your bubble, but if you're trying to recover the cost from what you spent, you're going to learn that it'll eventually cost you a lot more. These guys are relatively easy to breed but the time & effort along with the tanks you will need to grow out the quality fish that will fetch what you paid will definitely cost you...not to mention the food & electricity required. I mention tanks cuz when the fry become 2-3 inches in size, they need their own space or death will become of the weaker ones.

Please take my advice, do it for the fun of it...not in hopes of making your money back. I gave up breeding them cuz out of a batch of hundreds, I keep maybe 5 of which I think are the best from the batch and instead of selling the crappy ones, I used them to fertilize my planters or gave them away (very cruel on my part, that's why I decided to stop).

I appreciate your honesty and advice; which I'll most likely follow. What would a comparable flowerhorn cost in Cali?
