Hello guys and girls, its my first time here and this is my first flowerhorn ever. I used to keep Africans (mbunas and peacocks) for over 3 years but i somehow got bored with them constantly breeding.

Sold them few days ago, sterilized the tank (55gallon long) restarted the filter with bacteria from tropical and today i got my first flowerhorn. No idea if it is HIM OR HER, or if it is short body or regular, so please feel free to comment with your opinion. Considering the price it is not a show quality one but for start it can be good.

I measured him and it is around 9 cm - 10 cm (a bit under 4 inches), so what do you think how old "he" may be? And do you know if this is a Kamfa or Red dragon

Here are some photos of him (first one in the corner obviously stressed, just released from the bucket to the aquarium, second one 3 hours later)

. Colors somehow look washed (faded) so will "he" get more intense color or will "he" remain this way?

Super cool looking I’d say short body male
But I’m no expert
Fh like warmer water 84-86 just a little tip

Thanks Jacob. Regarding the temp. i keep him at 27c thats almost 81F and he seems fine swimming everywhere. i read about the temp different opinions and there are mostly 2 opposite stands... one claiming to keep him high 70es to 80 and the others as u mentioned above 84. low temp= slower growth less food slower metabolism longer life (less risk of infections)
higher temp =more food higher metabolism shorter life BETTER COLORS (shorter life expectancy) so i guess ill have to figure out on my own what temp suits him best

Your flowerhorn looks great. Colors will get better over time. The colors will also change with your FH mood as well.

Short body red dragon male Colors should intensify a bit and kok should fill out after he gets settled and happy.

one more thing... dont curse me for that please... since he is short body can i keep him with few blood parrots and a severum and/or red texas till they grow up and bond?

i know FH are nasty mannered but if short body i dont expect him to be evil midget but i accept advices never had american cichlids before and the tank is 55galons only.

after the overcrowded african cichlids tank this now looks like empty with a 4inch fish in it :)
