peace be upon u all

Hi, I just got my first gar today.A spotted juvenile gar. Within 1/2hr of exploring in my birchir tank my endli took a bite on it. I had to use tweezers to convince it to let the gar go. I've transfered the gar to a small tank where I keep my smaller polys where they are "train" to eat pellets.

Question is - Will my gar be able to eat pellets too? my observations from youtube videos, gar eats feeders in sideways motion. If they do eat pellets, do I have to get those floating ones??

all in all I just hope gar will still be alive tomorrow after that brutal bite

gars can be trained to eat just about anything, sometimes its really tough, but it can be done. and yeah gars won't eat off the ground. if they aren't hunting it pretty much has to float

mine eat massivore

How big is the gar? I would give him feeders until he's around 20-25cm, but you could try some floating pellets and freeze dried food like krill to see if he'll take it.

hopefully he survives...
they will take floating and sinking pellets eventually.
i suggest trying shrimp or freeze dried krill first.
how big is it?
i would wait til at least 6" before training.

when i first put my aligator gar in with my oscars the nipped him and such but that was only for the night the next day like nothing ever happened there still together and dont mind each other at all

i wish I can post pics and such...
update: my first gar died.
Gar was still alive when I got home.
tried to feed flakes.
I was working on my tetra tanks, it died when I came back to check up on him.
i think i will be getting another one tomorrow.

but can they comm well w african butterfly? Anyone w experience?
Is there a forum for african butterfly?

they are fine with african butterfly fish...
until they outgrow and eat them.
african butterfly fish get to 4" i think...florida gars to almost 2 feet in captivity.
sorry for the loss.
bichirs are usually some of the best tankmates for gars.

think i'll make sure i pump a gar to somewhat bigger than my current bichirs before mixing them. LFS got new stocks for gars and they are all about the same length where I got mine. I measured my lost gar before I threw him away...about 6cm long.
