I bought my first Jag a few days ago as a starting point of what I hope to be my first American Cichlid community tank.
My past experience with American Cichlids is only small. When I was a kid I ordered in an oscar at my LFS. 14 years and 4 tank upgrades later (I had no idea what I was getting into) sadly, he died. I've had Africans since.
Possibly stupidly, I entroduced an oscar into the tank a day after the Jag, both were 1", two days later the oscars a floater:(
Are these two fish incompatible? When I bought the jag it was in with other oscars so I thought it would be ok.
Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated.

I haven't kept them together myself but I know someone that managed to keep them together by introducing an Oscar that was a good few inches bigger than the Jag.

Oscars do not have the aggression needed to hang with a jag. Unless you have a large tank, it is doubtful that you will be able to keep much with it.

I have a jag housed with a oscar in a 180g. They have been together for about 2 years and both are about 12". I am not saying this will work for everyone, but it has for me so far.

Thanks, I have the jag in a 30 gal currently. I plan on moving him/her (not sure which) into a 6'x14"x18" in a few weeks. I would like to stock it with all small monsters and then upgrade 6months to a year down the track. My lfs has a 2" Texas Ive got my eye on and I'm also thinking of putting in a Cuban, any thoughts?
I'm new to the whole American cichlid scene, so any thoughts, advise, opinions are appreciated.
Cheers, Dez

this is definitely a situation where it might work, but there is always a risk when you mix some of the big CA cichlids together . . . I don't think there is any reason you shouldn't try it, just have a backup plan in case it doesn't work out . . .

I used to have a Jag with an Oscar and a JD along with some other fish. The Jag was the more aagressive of all the Cichlids, but nothing too crazy. But Jags are one of the more aggressive Cichlids you can get. It varies from Jag to Jag, IMO.

The only way it will work is if you got a big tank. Ive kept both jags and oscars and the jags are definetly the ones you need to watch out for. My jag right now is about 5 months old and is now around 7 in. When he was about 4 in. he was put in to the 55 with an oscar and ripped the 10 oscar up so bad and had to be moved in with the 15 in. pacu. That didnt work either, he just kept the pacu in the corner all day. Now hes in a 55 by himself and will kill pretty much anything. In a few months im going to try put the jag into a 240 with an oscar, silver aro, and some pbass. Now its worse since the jags teeth are growing in. My jag is definetly one of the crazy ones.

Cheers guys, hopefully I dont have one of the crazy ones. I dont want to keep it by itself for too long, but I dont want to put in anything that will get smashed either. I guess its a bit of hit and miss. I really dont want it to end up in a tank all by itself, I've been down that road befor. It put me off these types of fish. Its good to know ther are some success stories out there. Keep you'll posted
