So I just finished setting up my 75 Gallon my first rebuild project on a tank. I just finished moving my oscar and pleco over into it and felt pretty good about it. So tonight I head to my LFS to buy a background paper to decorate it. I am waiting to talk to my LFS guy and I hear another gentlemen saying he has a 220 Gallon tank and wants to know how much filter/heater and lighting is going to be for the tank. Its out of the guys price range. I then mention I have a 75 Gallon or a 43 gallon tank I would be willing to trade. We exchange numbers and I head out to his house to look at tank and measure it. The tank is 72"x24x24. I call a friend to check the gallon cause I could not remember the converting number. He tells me the tank is roughly 180 Gallon.
I did not have my digital camera with me so I could not take pictures. But what I did find out is that the tank is using 1/2' thick glass on all sides. The outside frame on the top of the tank is actually some sort of wood. I dont know what it was but it is very sturdy. In the center of the tank covering the center is two piece of 1/2" thick support glass which is screwed into the frame at the front and back. Just from pushing on it I honestly think that I could probally stand on it. In the left and right corners there is a overflow with predrilled holes in the bottom of aquarium. On the front right corner is my only concern. There is a large chip out of the corner. It is about 1/8-1/4" Chunk taken out of the corner. It does not go all the way thru glass but it is pretty large. The guy who has the aquarium took it for trade in some work he helped the guy out on his car. The guy said that it was setup up for several years with the chip like that and never leaked.
Sorry for long post but here are my questions.
It will come with all the needed plumbing to setup the overflow but the actuall tank that went inside stand had a large hole in the bottom of it. I would need a little time to find or build a replacement for the sump/overflow system that was under the tank.
First I assume I can use the aquarium without using the overflows and it would still hold water?
If that is true then if I were to substract the two missing sections I figure each one was easily 10-15 gallon overflow I would be lookin at roughly 150 Gallons of water and I have two filters that should be able to handle the filtration until I can make the overflow system. They are a penguin 400 and a Tetra Whisper 75 rated for 75 gallon tanks. Would that be enough filtration until I get everything else in place.
I have two 200 water heaters. They heat the 75 gallon with ease. Will they heat the 150-180 gallon tank?
And my biggest concern the large chip. Is there some type of epoxy/silicone/glass repair type kit that I can fill that large chip in to reinforce/make sure that it will not explode in that section.
He has also volunteered that IF we do decide to trade that he will haul the tank over and let me set it up in my garage and completely fill it so I can make sure it does not leak. He also said he would let me get the 180 Gallon tank up and running so that I could transfer my oscar and pleco directly over to the new large tank.
Any thoughts opinions advice and anything that I might be forgetting would be great. This type of project is a little intimidating and I want to make sure I have the knowledge I need before I completely make the trade.
Thanks in advance
Andy
