Hi everyone, finally saved enough pennies to get my first 300gallon, getting a metal stand built and I have a question about neoprene foam is it worth it or is plywood good enough.

Not sure about the foam but most use plywood and have no issues.

I assume you mean to support the glass?

I think neoprene is a little extreme. Most people go to the local hardware store and buy sheets of styrofoam or pink insulation foam. There is a debate as to which is better, I used both. I paid like $7 per 4x8' sheet.

That being said - yes for a glass tank you really really should use foam to support it, and it is 100% worth the $7.

Thanks for info, the tank is acrylic, anyone else has any experience with this?

I think it depends on the stand. For an acrylic tank, the stand should have cross braces underneath, not just around the edges of the tank. With enough cross braces, you probably don’t need anything between the tank and stand. However, if you do need anything, then you will need only plywood, not foam.

wednesday13 wednesday13 (the acrylic whisperer) can explain better what you should have between the tank and stand, but I know he will tell you that acrylic should not be placed on foam.

Do you have a drawing, design or picture of the stand that can help us get a visual of what you’re using?

Foam is for plate bottom glass tanks...ONLY.... It can and will do more harm than good when placed under acrylic tanks....foam is also unnecessary for glass tanks with bottom trim. If the tank is infact acrylic ur stand should have supports spaced every 24" square, minium. The tank should also be placed directly on the metal stand or on a piece of 1/2"-3/4" plywood on top the stand... if its unlevel, use shims to level it out from the floor 1st...then under that piece of ply inbetween the stand and tank if needed also... far better to use the appropriate amount of shims than to use foam/neoprene of any kind as it wont actually level anything, or support it properly.

Great info, tank is being built and I'm in the planning stages with the stand build so no picture or drawing yet. Thank everyone for the input. I'm one step closer to a monster fish keeper
