I just had some questions as this is going to be my first time setting up a planted tank.

1. Can plants like java fern and others that require low light be kept at high light levels?

2. I have a 20 gallon tank would a 80 watt light fixture work? Will that be to much?

3. Easy was to supplement C02?

4. Best liquid fertilizers?

5. Best plants for beginners?

The tank is near a window so it gets a a little light in the morning and some indirect light in the afternoon.

Thanks so much!

Best bet is plant what u like and see what happens. Every tank is going to be different, so its hard too tell what will work for u.
I wouldn't worry about co2 until u start using lots of light.

Just my opinion

Cool thanks! I will get a nice light and start experimenting with what plants work.

Or unless all the plants you decide you like require Co2...

Work your way slowly. Remember that plants need Light and Nutrients in equilibrium. If you bring one up, you have to bring the other up as well.

Most important Nutrients after Carbon (C) are Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).

So right now, with a standard light with no Nutrients and CO2, you can usually get away with Java Fern and ANubius. If you just increase light without changing the rest, you can possibly get algae since your out of sync.

If you increase your light, be prepared to increase your nutrients. Start simple and move up from there. ALways the bst way to learn. Good luck!

First things first.....WPG means NOTHING

What kind of light is it? t8, t5ho, t5no, led? That's what matters, and how tall the tank is, and the quality of the reflectors and how many bulbs the fixture has. Also that the bulbs use a kelvin rating between 5000 and 10000.

Don't do high light unless you also are going to run pressurized co2....or unless you want to grow copious amounts of algae. Also, if going the ugh light and co2 route, you will need to dose ferts DAILY. Its rewarding and I like that path, but its work and not for everyone. And more maintenance.

Now, as far as plants going from low to high light....a plant that likes low light can grow in anything higher than low light as well, provided everything is in balance with ferts and co2 and light, but a high light plant will NOT do well in low light under most circumstances.
