Congrats on your first! Your bichir still looks young to sex it, how long is it? I'm guessing under 6"
With only a glance I would say female but notice at the base of the tail where it is less opaque and the fin becomes thicker almost the the point that it matches the body color? That points to possibly the fish is maturing as male.
Time will tell for sure.

He is maybe 5 1/2 inches long at present, so hopefully still has a bit to grow. Coolest fish I've ever had!
