I just picked up 5 sd's Friday to be dithers for my 6ft hap and peacock tank. I was holding out for larger barbs like filaments or mascara, but never found any. These were the easiest to find and have been doing great. Any ideas on what kind they are and how big they'll end up? So far they're schooling just like I hoped they would.

I have 2 now had 3 a few years ago.http://www.tropicalfishsite.com/spotted-silver-dollar-metynnis-lippincottianus/

I assumed the 2 with the distinguished spots were spotted silver dollars, the other 3 have no spots besides the single one near the gills.

The spots will fade as they mature. Sometimes depending on their mood spots will show but vaguely.

That sucks they won't keep the spots, I like them. My cichlids normally take a day or two to settle in before the eat, I was surprised these jumped right on food. I don't buy too many non cichlids so it was different to have something interested in food right away.

I read 5" on another site, is that an accurate size?

They won't completely be gone but you will still notice them just won't be as intense when they were young.

Spotted silver dollars are a cool fish. I have a group of 5 of them myself in with my bleekeri. They are between 5-6" right now. Great schooling fish, little on the spooky side though. Walk up to the tank too fast and they go flying across the tank.

Mine seem to stay spotted up pretty well most the time. Even have a tint of orange on the bellies, most people that come over think they are piranha because they kind'a have that look to them.

Enjoy them, they are a nice species.
