My first snake! (pics)

I think the lamp would be best. Heating pads can get really really hot if they're unregulated, so if the snake burrows underneath the substrate, it can get burned. You should also get a digital thermometer with a probe to measure ambient and hotspot temperatures when you're using heating equipment.

Really, I'm not sure you need either of them. I don't know how warm the room where the snake is kept gets, but I've kept my corn snake with no supplemental heat for the past seven years and I've had no problems.

Congrats! One little suggestion, corns love cork bark flats as hides. Small, dark, and secure is the goal. Those half logs are way too open and airy and would have the snake killed if it was under one in the wild.

I agree with lovespunaround there too.

Anyway, good job! You got a much better start than most people! Enjoy him!

Oh wait, I just went back at your pics. That tank is huge! You might wanna downsize.

Thanks for your replies guys. I know 20g is a bit too big for this little guy, but I figured to just buy a 20g that would last him for the rest of his life instead of buying a small one now and a large one later. Actually, I plan to get maybe a 30g when he fully matures.

So, most people don't get to such a good start...I guess they don't have the necessary equipment?

No they have access to it. They just choose not to. I like how you approached your snake. You asked the right questions, and you responded to the answers pretty well in almost all respects. Most people will go out and buy the coolest/cheapest snake and whatever the pet store recommends (which is always the most expensive. *hint hint*) and ask questions after the snake is at deaths door.

Herps are too hardy for their own good.... lol

Thankyou. I have definetly learned to do this by the hard way....many, many pets. :)

Yes, same here... Most of us have been down that road. :)

Well, give the enclosure some spiffing up and keep us updated! Gonna give him a mate? Get one of Kathy Loves, she has EVERYTHING.

Okay, I'll be sure to. Thanks for the reference, but I think I'll keep one corn snake for now, so that he can focus more on me.

I agree, well said. Especially about the heat pad. DON'T use it. One of my snakes died a few months ago as a result of burns caused by a heat pad.
Snakes are stubborn especially ball pythons. My ball python laid on the heat pad until its belly turned red and eventually became an open sore.
