Picked up a 60 gallon tank last weekend and decided to give African's a try - up until now I've dealt mainly in SA's with a little bit of dabbling in CA's.

60 gallon tank w/ black lace rock over #1 crushed coral.

Got an Eheim Pro II for filtration running on it with a 48" CoraLife PC lighting fixture running 50/50 10k/actinic lighting.

Also have an AquaClear powerhead running at 400 GPH that I'm thinking about removing, the Eheim Pro II runs at 250 GPH - but I wanted to keep the powerhead in for now to get the tank seeded ASAP (the sponge filter is seeding the tank).

I've since added some java moss and various anubias plants - with plans to add some vallisneria behind the rockwork and possibly some java ferns.

Tank stock:
Brichardi x8
Lelupi x6
Calvus x2
Syndontis x1

All fish are in their sub adult stages, probably will end up removing the lelupi to their own separate breeding tank in the future after the brichardi go on their rampage. Right now the calvus are the dominate fish in the tank - taking up the two largest cave areas and doing a pretty good job of chasing anything out.

The night after setting the tank up one of the brichardi was found floating upside down - I attribute it to a small .5 ppm spike in ammonia from adjustment to the bioload and I'm told Tangs in general are pretty touchy with stress and changes in water chemistry - so who knows.

I'll get some new images of the tank up this weekend after I figure out exactly where I'm placing all of the plants.

What are your opinions on everything? Would I be alright removing the powerhead after the tank is well seeded, or should I leave it in? What would the fish appreciate more?

What should I be feeding these fish?

Thanks.

I was worried about their slower growth rate too, but was told they might have a good chance due to their extra armor/additional scales and the large amount of lace rock I've got in the tank.

Either way I'll watch and try to make sure they don't get killed if things go south.

What is the footprint of the tank?

Seems a bit to bright. Check with the others on here, I could be wrong.

I personally don't have a power head on all the time in my shelly tank. What I did was place a powerhead on it's side on a flat rock and turn it on for a few hours a day to clean the poop.

I think you need more rock work on the sides with a gap in the middle. JMO.

Don't rule out the Calvus!

NLS is what I feed mine.

nice tang setup! i dont see why you should take the powerhead out! its up to you! i think the brichardi's would love to swim in the water current! again its up to you! for the most part i feed omega one and dainichi and sprinkle some nls. mainly omega one and dainichi! what ive seen with the omega one when it comes to micropredators and piscivores, they grow quick! later on id recommend moving the brichardi's and leaving the leleupi! keep it up!

Ditto on keeping the Leleupi and move the brichardi instead. Although the leleupi can get a nasty streak when they age. Any plants yet? I have heard the same about parms/temp. sensitivity w/ Comps./Calvus. I have not experienced that in my tank, and I do 25-30% WC weekly. I do however try to add the new water at the same temp. as my tank. Other than that, keep feeding the high quality food and check the temps. on WC water.
