hi, i have been looking too get into a hobby that i don't have too spend *too* much money in other then fishing and boating. so i have decided too get into fish keeping i have been reading posting and reading some more on this forum for a while now trying too get as much knowledge as possible. but still need too learn more lots more.

but this Saturday i am going too buy a 50G fish tank. the owner is an hour and 20 minutes away one way. but! the fish tank only costs $50 with lid and she said she will also give me everything i need too start up a fish tank (evidently she is getting out of the hobby) :headbang2and she will have it filled when i get there.

depending on the equipment i might keep it or sell and buy better quality equipments as i do not want too cut corners at all.

so i will be posting progress of me adding on too my first fish tank. i will be asking questions of is this a newbish mistake. and is this a reliable equipment piece

i have watched some youtube videos of people doing water changes. i have a question of there cleaning products

is it OK too use that wal-mart crap with a heavily planted tank or even good for the fish it looks like it will often hit them. (heh funny kid)

even though it is a small tank is that brush good? it will keep your hands out of the tank and wont stress the fish as much. but when you go on the corners wont it fall easy? it does a good job and i admire his fish tank.

fresh water? i don't want too have too feed live food too expensive. don't Oscars need live food time too time?

Sorry, had to do that. Basically, for me fishkeeping is the reason I don't have a car lol, but I'm in college and wouldn't really drive one much if I did. This next summer looks promising though ;)

For the first question, what do you mean by Wal-mart crap? For the second question, those Magfloat algae cleaners are great. They generally do well around corners actually. You just take the outside piece around the corner quickly and the inside piece snaps across. If it does come off though, if you have a real Magfloat, it will float right to the top.

Don't do oscars. They get too big for a 50 gallon tank. However, they don't need live food ever. Most will take some from time to time, but they really only require a good quality pellet and you can also include a variety of frozen or freeze-dried meaty foods.

ya i know its expensive but i was saving for an $18000 boat and fishing and crabbing i cant do during winter and its getting two be fall so its not as fun.

i don't really cichlids or reed tanks. i like tanks that are planted. not a big rock and reed fan. i do like some barbs i need too go too house of tropicals too look at there fish...agen.

In a 50 gallon you could do a really nice Asian planted tank. Crypts, java fern, java moss-all pretty easy to find and should be ok with standard aquarium lighting. Stock it with some loaches, some barbs and/or rasboras, and maybe a couple nice gouramis as centerpiece fish. I'm actually planning a similar setup for my 75 when I do some moving around of my tanks
