Recently I have been setting up a 75 gallon SW and I will need food and money for a lionfish... My mom has a 1000-2000 gallon pond (not sure about actual size) that has a few orandas. We live in central Texas so winters shouldn't be a problem... I saw a deal on eBay that is selling 30 mosquito fish for 10 bucks plus 12 dollar shipping, and I bought it.

Should I include flake food?

Would they be safe to feed to a lionfish? (The plan is to wean the lion off live food eventually and get it to eat jumbo krill)

Is there anything I should do when I receive the package?

How fast do they breed?

Mosquito fish (gambusia affinis or gambusia holbrooki) are livebearers that breed quickly. They can be a bit nasty to other fish in the tank or pond. Plant cover should be provided for the fry. They will be fine as feeders for your lionfish. As far as food for the gambusia is concerned, they will take flake or most any other fish food.

Thanks, my mom has some moss, hornwort and some Lilly's for the fry to hide in.

i wish i had a pond that big.

I love it :) we've had it since we moved in... About 8 years. Last summer my mom was adding water and it was on all day and killed all the fish. So we have added 3 goldfish so far.

I suggested blue gills, catfish, or other cool stuff but he didn't want those... It was hard for me to convince her to get mosquito fish.

Yay! The fish arrived two days early! I was doubtful when the bag felt about 95* degrees (central Texas being in a cardboard box for several hours)

I acclimated them carefully and about 45 minutes later I put about 35 in the pond (the person sent some in case of DOA) And I put 2 females and 1 male in my 10 gallon.

No DOA thankfully...
