Hey guys I have been a member of the mfk community for a couple of years haven’t really posted much... just get on here read other people’s subjects and that’s about it... however this is my first or second post.... I would like to announce that I have finally become an owner of a Osteoglossum Bicirrhosum. Aka silver Arowana he is tiny now but I am excited to watch him grow!

Congratulations, very cool, awesome to watch them grow from such a small size. Be very careful when theyre that small with any strong fitration or powerheads. I lost one yesterday to my power head which was accidentally switched back on after a water change :’(

Yes, I am very excited! Oh no I am sorry to hear that!!! Was he your only one? Thank you for the advice... right now I have him in my grow out tank. I am going to be setting up a 170gal for him very soon... I am excited for all the changes that are coming... I will keep updates as they come along.

170 gal won't last long either, congrats on your buy!
Silver aros are especially fond of insects and its easily the healthiest thing for them

What would you recommend like crickets... or the question I should ask is.... what’s the cleanest insect for them to consume in your opinion?

Congratulations on your new baby, it's gorgeous
Wish you all the best

A varied diet is best for your Arowana: Shrimp, pieces of fish, pellets and their favourite is live insects... crickets, meal worms, earthworms are all good.

For now, feed her whatever she will eat as she is very small and you need to put some growth on her but start trying with other foods first... if she takes pellets, shrimp or fish, its great, if not, go with insects but keep trying to introduce the other foods as well and use insects as a treat ans to vary the diet.
Its nice when they take other foods from small and not just insects otherwise you often battle afterwards to get them to eat the other foods

Unfortunately as has been said, she will outgrow the 170 gallons very fast so if you can, go with a bigger tank so that in a year's time you dont have to upgrade again

Make sure your lids are closed tight and no gaps at all times.. they are masters at jumping.

Good luck and keep the updates coming

He is! I have been in the hobby for a long time! It’s a passion of mine. However he is my first Arowana so I am pretty excited about it! I have kept pb, red tail cats, clown knifes, etc.... but never one of these guys so I am happy!

Thank you for your valuable information! I know about most of what their diet consist of... I have never done insects before that’s why I wanted to know if by “clean” have you or anyone you know of had issues with disease coming from using insects? Or is it a pretty safe way to go?

I have never had a problem with live insects , I do get them from a reputable supplier that supplies the reptile keepers community as well
I get my crickets, meal worms and dubia roaches from them
I grow my own earthworms for my stingrays as well so I know they are safe
Just wash them very well and leave them in water for an hour or so and then i give them a final rinse
