Help! I have a 20 inch long catfish (Leiarius pictus). Tonight he ate a floating glass thermometer that was in his 220 galllon tank. I watched him swallow it....I figured he would spit it out BUT he hasnt and its been a few hours. This is no longer in his mouth, I see a long bump under his belly. Has anyone ever had this happen? Will (can) the fish spit it out after some time (this will not pass the other way!). Thanks and wish us luck!!

They sometimes spit out large bones a day or two after eating them.

The only thing i think of is to get out the needle nose pliers have sombody hold the mouth open and try to pull it out if the cat does not spit it up on it's own in a few days.

How long as the thermometer???

I have heard of Red Tail Cats eating large rocks and slabs of slate and holding them in for a few days before regurgitating them out. Maybe the fish will gag it up.

Thanks to all who helped out w/ advice and concern. After about 12 hours my not so little buddy barfed up (intact) the thermometer.......and then promply tried to eat it again. Note to self.....no more floating thermometers in the tank!!!!! Happy New Year! george

Was it an Omega One thermometer? They have a much higher content of vitamins and essential fatty acids in their products.

glad to hear it worked out.
