That is a sign that the water chemistry is annoying them and they are scratching. Check your water PH and ammonia levels soon before they get sick and die.

Nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia can all cause this. Parasites and using some dechlorinators can also cause this.

Since natives can usually easily handle a wide ph range, I would look into the other possible causes.

like what should i do to look into this i use Aqua safe... chlorinater, and the water has been in there for 3 days.... and first time i have seen it? So what else... and what can i do.. or is it even an issue and they were maybe just messing around

Get API test kits for nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia. I also really recommend using Prime dechlor. If they're not doing it often I wouldn't worry about it too much, just keep an eye on them. They usually don't do stuff like that for no reason.

so pick up the prime dechlor and API tests... how do you tell if there is ammonia or high nitrate or ph? ill call the fish store and see what they say and how much is that stuff about all together
