Shortly after "lights on" my husband walked past the 75 and my fish flipped out! They all went nuts, zooming across the tank, flipping under and over spray bars, wedging behind the filter inputs, hitting the glass lid, and ramming into the sides and driftwood!:nilly: :nilly: :nilly:

My salvini has a chunk taken out of his forehead, my severums are scratched up and missing scales, and they are just hanging in the tank behind the driftwood right now, all dark and tore up.

Any ideas why they freaked out like this?

Your husband spooked them.

lights on should be a gradual thing. room lights or sunlight first, 1 light 20 mins later, other light few mins after. an imediate light turn on already spooks them enough, then ur husband jus threw them over board.

It's like when you go from a dark room out into the bright sunlight at high noon and your eye balls want to explode. Fish need time to adjust too.

Your husband wasn't in an old plaid bathrobe was he??

Most fish hate plaid... :D

(OK, the other guys probably got it right, tho the is some truth in my statement)

Name withheld just because...

I have fish get spooked when the lights are on and I have been watching them for a while. I think it was a combination of your husband and turning the lights on. This is why when I go to see my tank I turn the room lights on before I go down and the tank's lights are on a timer so they fish are used to it.

The 75 is in the living room and the morning sun gradually lights up the room before the tank lights come on, so it's not like it goes from pitch black to bright light instantly. The fish are also used to a lot of activity, my kids and their friends run by it and the dog tries to catch the fish through the glass (need to get a pic of that someday!). Guess they just didn't like his pyjamas or maybe they weren't fully "awake" yet!

It was really weird, but they seem to been normal now, not hiding and their colors are back.
