My zz flowerhorn died today. He was about 7" and healthy in every way. I raised him from fry in a 75 by himself and I feel like I did everything right. He was eating and swimming like crazy earlier today and I come home and he's laying on the bottom of the tank dead. I feel like I did everything right for him and I'm just dumbfounded more than anything. Could he have banged his head on the glass? Ate gravel? This is just really strange. Has anyone else ever had something like this happen? By the way the water parameters were fine and he never acted sick. Here is the poor guy about a month ago.

Sorry to hear that man thats crazy without a scratch on him well only thing I could figure is to find a young 2.5 inch flowehorn or trimac(or other known flowerhorn parent species) stick one in the same tank to for a couple of weeks to figure out if something is wrong

Personally I wouldn't go the test fish route. A big water change, new chemipure/carbon/pureigen(whatever you fancy), a few days of running and you should be ready to rock. Regardless, I'm sorry to hear the news. Sometimes, unexplained things happen in this hobby. I'd check the water company though, they did a unannounced flush with some added chemicals here a few months ago. Luckily I was lazy that week(held off on water changes). My buddy down the street wasn't lazy and he lost his whole tank I just lost a few pond goldfish from water top off. It was the same for him. He came home to dead fish.

That really sucks, but it happens.. Don't be too down, hope you get another with some better luck

Thanks for your replies. I'm really baffled by this one. He only cost me $6 and he was getting really beautiful. I drove out of town to get him because my town only has petsmart and their flowerhorns are very low quality. I don't know what I'm going to do with my 75 now but I'm going to a really good fish store out of town in a couple weeks to see what they have. I'm going to do a big water change and all that then I might throw another fish into the 75 just to see but I highly doubt anything is wrong with the water. I have multiple tanks set up and I do weekly water changes and all of the other fish are fine. Just a bizarre thing I guess.
