I lost my 14 inch oscar to dropsy about a year ago and I was very upset. Now i might lose my flowerhorn as well. =( He ( I think its a he) has started to swell. At first I thought he might actually be a female and was full of eggs because my two flowerhorns have been courting. But then he swelled a little larger and then a little larger. He now has a little trouble swimming and has been laying upside down behind some driftwood. I added epsom salts according to the recomended amount in the freshwater disease guide. Buying metro today to try and save him. But I think it may be to late. What do you guys think?

Can't really see the swelling in this pic but this is my FH. I was pretty positive it was a male but I'm praying its is actually a female and this is egg impaction.

Sorry man.. I'm not sure how to treat dropsy..
Why not google dropsy treatment and see the search results.. This way, you get instant answers..

I'm treating using metro according to oddballs method. I was just curious if anyone had any different experiences that could be helpful. Google was pretty much useless, not much information when it comes to curing dropsy.

There it is. =)

The only common link I can think of that could be causing this is the food. I fed my oscar almost exclusively on hikari cichlid gold, same with my flowerhorn. A suspected cause of dropsy is high protein intake with lack of fibre. Any thoughts?

Also, I'm now positive he has dropsy. He is very swollen and rarely moves anymore. His lips have also started to Turn a darker color. He is in rough shape. It's very frustrating because I take such good care of him. I do 50% water changes twice a week, have three 6 foot bamboo plants, and spot clean poo in his tank as necessary. ( every second-ish day.) I even taught him how to roll over for food and jump out of the water to grab it. I was even looking at a 180 gallon tank for him and his mate.

The only bright side is that if he dies, which it looks like he will, I'm finally going to start a discus tank.
