(If you insist on not reading, then by all means scroll past down and look at the pics, I must insist though that if you do skip reading you must post a comment :D:D:):) )

Well hey MFK. Just thought I oughtta post some pics of my awesome African Clawed Frogs(xenopus laevis), ACF for short. These guys(females actually :) ) are what made me get into keeping fish. I was in 4-H for like 10 years (8-18, i'm 20 now) and we could take these special interest projects, so I wanted to take a fish one. So on my 15th birthday my parents bought me a 29 gallon Top Fin starter kit from Petsmart. I was siked as hell to get fish, and thought I had the biggest tank ever, lol.:nilly: I got some Convicts and experienced the best part of fish keeping, having them breed in my own tank. WOW!!!:D After they bred, IDK it just got boring and I just didn't want fish anymore so like a month later(Convicts bred within a few days, lol) I got three ACF's for my new 29. These frogs are fully aquatic and be kept like fish essentially sides the fact that they breath air, so they do shoot up to breathe, which you can actually hear them take a breath.

Well one of them started to grow big, like twice as fast and ate the other two. What I didn't know then is that this was a female which can grow twice as big as males and she just ate the smaller males. Pretty crazy, huh? I wasn't mad at all, she interested me alot and she lived in her tank by herself for 2 years and then I put her in a 10 gallon. I got a GT for the 29( I didn't know how big GT's got at first, he went into a 56 in the end). she lived in there without filtration and with bi-monthly water changes. I feel bad now that she had to deal with that, but stuff happens. After 3ish months in the 10 gallon, I put her back in the 29 by herself, she loved it.

She lives with another female ACF which is half her size right now, still a juvenile and a senegal bichir. The tank is setup with densly planted fake plants on the left and a few plants on the right. They all love the plants, they swim and just sit in between them fully surrounded. The senegal get along with the ACF's, doesn't even notice them actually. I see the senegal regularily just swim right in front of the frogs or just sit on top of the frogs, the frogs don't even care.

The ACF's aren't really smart, they just sort of open their mouths and swallow they food, they don't have teeth or anything. The bigger female will try and eat my finger everytime, it's kool.:D I will say though that the older bigger female is a little more intelligent then the other one. Their natural bottom feeders, just using their front legs to push anything in their gaping mouths. I feed floating pellets mostly and she knows to go to the top and eat while the younger female get's the scraps. :) Smart ACF she is.

If I had to give all my fish away and tanks I would have to keep the older female ACF. She's at least 5 years old now, with normal lifespans from 8-10 yrs. Without this frog I wouldn't have my 56 with a bullhead catfish or my 125 planted gar tank. I owe it all to her, lol sounds weird but everyone has that fish that they got in the begginning which they will always remember. For me though, it's a 5 year old frog. :)

Oh and since she has gave me endless happy moments for 5 years and counting the least I could do for her is get a male for her. :naughty::naughty: I found a site that sells ACF's(over 10 diff species) and I emailed them for the price of a fully mature male. Now since my pics are finally uploaded, pics shall ensue.

I don't recommend holding them, but I've moved her alot and hand feed her most of the times so she stood still while taking the pics.

That's its cloaca, where her eggs are laid from. Males have the exact opposite.

Hopefully you can see this, but they have three claws in their back feet. Thusly named African Clawed Frogs.

This is the little one, still growing. Probaly around 6 months or so old.

MITTENS.:nilly: My 9-yr old cat who follows me around late at night when I take pics of the fish.

Enjoy!! If anyone wants to know info on these frogs, please ask would love to help anyone getting one.

nice tanks and frogs! we have similar stories although my frog gave me the appetite for more frogs lol i have a white dwarf frog that i have had for years! but nice tanks and story..:headbang2

Thanks guys, no other place would a man appreciate a man's frog, lol.:nilly::nilly::nilly::D

Smpage, no they don't bite each other or anything. The frogs used to try when the bichir was little but was too fast. They would never be able to handle the bichir, so they stopped trying after like 3 days. The bichir is just too smart to even try at the frogs, the frog are too spazzy to sit still while he could try and take a bite. The senegal will follow my hand on the glass if I move it on it, very smart. Frogs on the other hand just try and eat my finger, can't blame they, they eat everything.

Well I ordered up a mate for my large female. It's a nice fully mature albino male ACF. Maybe i'll, get some eggs. She has laid eggs twice already when I accidentely put too cold water in their tank.

dude where do u get frogs so big?????? what do they eat?????? i want some!!!!!!!!!!! how big is that striped raphel u in ur avatar????? i got a 8 inch one that just went threw a growth spurt..........

LFS(not like Petsmart) carries them. Their are ADF(African Dwarf Frogs) which get a mere 2 inches tops and then there's the ACF which the females get 6 inches at least.

I feed them Reptomin turtle sticks(their good for the frogs too, even says so on the can) and then just whatever else. Basically same as fish sides like flakes and the such. Their frogs, so don't need fed daily, but I feed them small amounts daily.

The raphael in the pic isn't mine but I have a little 5 incher and he hasn't grown in the 6 months that I have had him, lol.

cute cat-fish lol...what a cool story it made me smile
