here's a few pics of my florida gar he's around 9" and is a eating machine!!
Have any of you kept a lima shovelnose(sorubim lima)with a gar? I was thinking that would make a good tankmate for him but I would like some input first

Aw! Amazing, I really want to find something around the 150 range then get a gar, right now I only have a 75 gallon, how much did that set up cost you?

Should be fine as long as size is similar. I currently have 2 Limas with my 4 Floridas, and will be adding my other 6 Limas as they catch up in size. Will probably add a couple more gars as well. I would suggest having multiple Limas, instead of a single Lima, as they are a lot calmer that way and are less likely to freak out and possibly freak the gar out.

As well that's a nice florida you have there.

ah I see! are the limas a schooling fish or do they just stay calmer in groups? and just curious as to what size tank you have them in?

oh and to answer the previous ? I got a killer deal on the tank it was $300 for the setup plus about 50 or 60 pink and striped convicts. I quickly sold the convicts as I am not interested in keeping them. and the filtration is 3 emperor 400's and 2 magnum 350's

I would say that they are somewhat of a schooling fish, a social fish at the very least. They are definitely calmer in groups and I have heard they exhibit a group hunting behaviour when housed in larger groups. I have not seen this behaviour with mine though. Hopefully as the little guys get bigger and go with the larger ones.

As far as tank size, they were in my 5' x 3' indoor pond. With the arrival of 2 large gator gars they got bumped to a 75 gallon. Sizes for the gars and the limas are all between 10 and 15 inches. Hopefully in the next week they will be getting moved back into a pond once they gators get upgraded.
