Is there anyway to prevent this? I don't want it to get that calius on it's nose. It only does this when Im infront if the tank. Other then that it just cruises along. I always thought gars where like "logs" just kind of float around and enjoy life. But mine is all over the place, well when I'm infront of the tank. I expect this out of my dovii but never expected it out of a gar. Granted I'm
new to this type of fish. Are gars territorial?

Anyway thanks in advance.

Oh wait also what is the easiest way to train off of live. Are they similar to arowanas where if I fast them a couple days they'll eat anything?

Thanks again.

No do not starve him, just be consistent in the area of the tank you put the feeders in, then take a piece of tiliapia fillet, cut to a size that is easy for the gar to swallow. Then take the piece of fillet and dangle it in the water in front of the gar's nose. Try it with out the feeders first. This may not work on the first try but have patience and remain consistent. As far as the glass rubbing try to cover both sides of the tank this will make him feel more comfortable and secure.

What type of gar is it?

It's a spotted gar. I'll give your feeding technique a try. I have dangled some food in there but it was just a chunk of food. I'll cut more of a sliver of food. And lastly I'm not sure what you mean by cover the bottom of the tank. It has river stones in there right now. Could you clarify that for me. Thanks for your response!

not the bottom but the sides of the tank. I dont believe they are a territoral fish. Not like Cubans or Gator gars. how long have you had the spotted?

how is your aim? cause if its good, you can get silversides and drop it so that it falls infront of your gars. i do that with mine and it looks like the silverside is swimming and triggers its attack instinct. after awhile they will be used to silversides and will just pick off the bottom of the tank.

Cut the tilapia fillets into strips and feed from the center of the tank. This has worked for me. After a few weeks I weaned all of my gars off of live food(still give them a few once a month)..This method has also allowed me to train them on pellets when fillets and market shrimp aren't available.

Hope this helps,
Chris

I've had it since last Wednesday. So less then a week.

Thanks for all the info everyone I will put these suggestions to the test this evening. And see what happens.

You all where very helpful, much appreciated!

with my gar, i just kept dropping shrimp in front of him and eventually he started eating them and then i did the same thing with pellets and i just let his curiosity take hold
