My giant Midas hates my heater.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He routinely picks it up and smashes it against the glass of the tank. It has one of those rubber stopper things on the bottom end, so it hasn't shattered, but let me tell you, it has put up with some abuse. He takes out ALL of his aggression on it.

In any event, the heater still works fine, even though it is constantly beaten to a pulp. :)

What is it with heaters and Midas's? I wonder if he thinks its alive since its putting out heat?

Thoughts?

I would assume its the clicking of the metal contact inside, i forget how much (mathmatically) but sound travels much faster in water...

so a harsh click sound (which most heaters will make) when in water it will sound much harsher.

That, or the light.

IMO id cover the heater in a pvc shield.

My Midas that I had years ago never had a problem with the heater in the tank. I had also kept Oscars and never had a problem.

With my current set up I have the Hydor In line heaters on my canister return lines. It gets the heater out of the tank so it safer and looks better. So I'm not really sure how my current Midas would react to a heater.

My oscar has had a thing about the heater as well, having said that most of the tank ornaments were fair game. About a year ago we started adding more of them and he routinely spends more time moving them and burying them instead of attacking the heater.

Not the best solution but it does somewhat work.
