Just got home from work now and noticed that my golden severum female was fending of the male so i just thought that i'd look near the area of gravel that the pair had moved and to my suprise there is about 150 to 200 eggs all on the surface of the large river pebble i'm absoloutly made up because i have never had this happen to me in all my fish keeping years :woot:

Now then i do have a problem though .......... in my tank i have a 9" silver aro and a fire eel and a tinfoil barb SHOULD I BE WORRIED ???
The male Golden severum seems to be doing a good job on keeping the tinfoil barb away but who's to say that he my miss him on the off chance ???

PLEASE PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE i have never bred fish before !!!

WELL DONE SEVERUMS :clap :clap :clap :clap

Hi Dan, I have no idea why she puts the white stones there except that new mommies get domestic, sorry, couldn't resist. I Have mainly bred live beares and egg scatterers, plus a few nest builders like sunfish and angels. I"m guessing that your severums are about 5-6" long and if they are at all like sunnies or even angels they will do a pretty good job of nest guarding but I would not trust the barb or the spiney eel as they will eat eggs given a chance, I'm sure more experienced breeders will speak up but since you have them in a 180g tank that if I remember right should be about measure 2'x2'x6' approx. I would put in a partition if you can. If they nested in the center of the tank I don't know how to shift them, but if they are towards an end it should be easy using egg crate (light diffuser) and a couple of clamps or some suction cups. That will minimize the stress on the happy couple and keep the nest safe. I think that the eggs hatch in 3-5 days but the fry are even tastier targets for the fire eel and barb.
You also need to get some liquid fry food and an eye dropper, the old greenwater infusoria and daphnia diets are harder to find and frankly not as safe as the new stuff, although micro worms work great ( check your filter media to see if you have them). you will still need to buy fry food.
Good luck, post pics.

Another thought strikes me, some people seperate the eggs of fish from their parents but I have found that doing so with nesting fish like angels this leads to a fungus problem, I would not do it. My sunnies were good with the fry until they got about 1/2" long then I had to seperate them as the parents started eating them. Most of the egg layers I have bred have been lay and ignore type fish like corys and dojo loaches.
Don't buy one of those white perforated dividers, they interfere with water flow, IMO the best and cheapest divider is a light diffuser/egg crate with 1/4" approx. wide holes.

Try the home improvement or hardware stores first, much cheaper.
