:duh: Well my Convicts have all lived through my learning process :) now im getting into a bit of a pickle.. apparently im substrate retarded!! so i have 6 week old con fry (who lived through fighting parents and panicking owner) tank switches and all!! i have about 50 left and a large old black con who cant see well with them in an 80 gal.. is it wise to switch the substrate from large rocks to pea gravel?? will this dmage the fish or my water quality? i have never used a test kit either.. how i managed is beyond me lol (1 year in aquariums) i have asked this question in other forums but considering i have cons, i wanted to ask this forum also :) fyi i know cons arent a worthy cichlid but i love them so be kind :)

as for my older (rescue) con who has been stunted.. he is getting an 29 gal today!!DSCN1801.JPGRSCN1862.JPGDSCN1822.JPGDSCN1839.JPG

that con looks mature (Y). very cool.
as long as yu wash the new substrate thoroughly like 5 times, then i dont see a problem.

very nice

There's nothing wrong with Cons at all. Some people aren't into them because of their common availability, but they're a great cichlid, so don't let anybody tell you otherwise :)

As far as the substrate, I've done this with both sand and gravel before with no problems, but never with fry in the tanks. Not sure if any fry would be injured in the process. Either way, it's a huge pain in the ass.

Don't worry about nothing, you seem to be doing great. And it shouldn't be a problem switching substrate while fry are in the tank. I've done it a couple of times in the past with no problems -They know very well to get out of the way of falling objects etc ;)
