Pure Pantepec region descendants. Been turning stones for over a year trying to find these and finally scored a few. No flash or aquarium lights in pics.

They're 2 different fish. The smaller of the 2 is suspected female, but not 100%. I just got the last one I found available a couple days back that's a confirmed egg layer just to be safe...lol. She had a rough trip though. USPS crushed the box and broke the bag, but they were nice enough to put the wet box in a big plastic bag. Luckily there was enough water left to keep her around until delivery. She's still settling in. I think these are going to be a bigger challenge than flowerhorn to breed. Super aggressive.

How big is that male, 6-7"?

Maybe 6", the suspected female is around 5", and the female that isn't pictured yet is probably 6.5". I'm hoping first smaller one ends up being female because the bigger girl is going to try to dominate...lol

Really nice looking male.

I must admit all of the Mexican variants look pretty much the same to me. Escondido, Chairel, Vontehillo, all pretty much the same. Some lake/laguna variants have larger spots, some of the riverine variants smaller spots, other than that? Some of these H. carpintis, such as the Escondido, and the Chairel, are collected from the exact same watershed, the Rio Tamesi, which eventually flows into the Panuco River, and on into the Gulf of Mexico. I recall back when these various variants or locales were first being made available to the public, a lot of controversy seemed to surround them, and everyone thought that their variant was the most beautiful.

Good luck with the breeding.
